How we help
The IY Group is The Island's main group programme, providing a safe, welcoming and fun space for children and young people to connect with others, build confidence and enjoy new experiences.
Funded by City of York Council until March 2027, the group runs every Tuesday and is open to children and young people who have been referred to The Island.
Sessions are held at the Riverside Centre on Huntington Road and offer a wide range of activities designed to engage and inspire young people. From arts and crafts to sports, games and creative projects, there is something for everyone to enjoy.
What to expect:
The Women and Girls Group provides a welcoming, supportive and inclusive space for female and non-binary young people supported by The Island, alongside a trusted adult in their life.
Funded by Women in Business through Two Ridings, the programme consists of 12 sessions delivered across the year. Young people attend with a trusted adult, which may be their mentor, parent, carer or another significant adult who supports them.
Throughout the programme, participants have the opportunity to meet and learn from a variety of inspiring guests and organisations. Previous sessions have welcomed speakers and facilitators ranging from local colleges and self-employment coaches to anime artists and drumming workshop leaders, giving young people the chance to explore new interests, skills and future opportunities.
Who can attend?
The Island's group activities are available to young people who are currently receiving support from The Island, as well as those who have completed their mentoring journey.
Young people may join our groups at different stages of their mentoring experience, helping them build connections, confidence, and a sense of belonging.
We also welcome and support siblings through our group programmes.
Where do clubs take place?
IY Group takes places at the Riverside Centre on Huntington Road.
The Women and Girls Group currently takes place at Up a Level Gaming Cafe in York City Centre.
What age do you support?
We work with children and young people ages between 8 and 18 years old.
What activites do you offer?
All of our group sessions are youth-led, which means young people help shape the activities and experiences on offer. We listen to what they want to do and work together to make it happen.

All of the services we deliver are free to attend.
Are staff and volunteers DBS checked?
Yes, all Staff and Group Volunteers are Enhanced DBS Checked.
Can young people have additional support
Before a young person begins their journey with The Island, we take time to get to know them and understand their individual needs. This includes either a home visit or an in-depth conversation with the young person and their family, helping us ensure the right support is in place from the very start.
We work with a wide range of children and young people, each with their own experiences, strengths, and challenges. Our approach is tailored to meet their individual needs and circumstances.
Throughout a young person's time with The Island, we maintain regular contact with families, checking in to understand how things are progressing and ensure the support we provide continues to be the best fit for them.
