An Island youth group mentee interview

Meet Isabel*, one of the young people we support here at The Island through our group based mentoring programme. We sat down with Isabel to discuss their thoughts about youth groups and why they are important to the next generation.
How long have you been attending The Island and how does your youth group help you?
Isabel: I have been attending The Island for about two months now. The group-based sessions helps me to socialise with others and improves my confidence. It also helps me forget about the negativity in my life.
What type of stuff do you do at The Island?
Isabel: I come to The Island group-based sessions every week on a Tuesday. At 4.30pm I get involved in group activities, followed by life skill sessions at 5.30pm, which I learn a lot from.
Things I do during the weekly sessions include preparing for job interviews, including writing CVs and looking at ways to improve my CV; learning how to make smoothies and having fun, like playing games with other mentees.
What skills have you learnt from being at The Island?
I have learnt so much. I feel more prepared and positive about job hunting as we practice interview techniques, like how to answer questions, what to say and what not to say and how to dress for an interview.
I have never felt confident preparing food and drink for myself and the sessions we have had on making food and drink as made me feel more confident about living on my own in the future.
What do you like the most about youth groups?
I love everything about The Island. Every Tuesday, I am excited to leave school to come to The Island. I have never been part of something like this. The group sessions are fun and gives me a chance to relax after school and to talk to someone if I need to.
What is your favourite memory so far being involved with The Island?
When we all went bowling as a group is my best memory of The Island. It was the first time in a long time that I smiled and laughed again.
Why are youth groups important to children and young people? Can you describe why they are important?
They are very important. Youth group gives me a chance to be myself and to have a good time without worrying. I am smiling and laughing a lot more now and am learning new things each week.
How do you feel after your youth group sessions?
I feel happy.
If you could describe the island in three words, what three words would you use?
Amazing, relaxing and joy.
