Interesting fast facts on the sunshine vitamin – vitamin D!
According to several publications, it has been reported that taking vitamin D can reduce the odds of developing respiratory infection such as the cold and flu, especially among those who have documented deficiencies.
Facts on Vitamin D
Many children (and adults) across the UK are likely to struggle to get enough vitamin D due to the UK climate. Dietician, Bridget Marr shares with us some fast facts on vitamin D and what you can do to improve your vitamin D levels:
- Vitamin D is needed for healthy bones, teeth and muscles. It also helps keep our immune systems healthy.
- We normally get most of our vitamin D from sunlight which helps us make vitamin D in our skin from April to September.
- Due to the coronavirus lockdown many people may not be getting enough vitamin D as we are indoors much more than usual.
- Public Health England recommends that adults and children over the age of 1 consider taking a supplement of 10 micrograms of vitamin D daily.
- Goodfood sources of vitamin D include: egg yolks, liver, mushrooms and oily fish and red meat.
- Children aged 1 to 4 years old should be given a daily supplement containing 10 micrograms of vitamin D.
