GROUP BASED MENTORING

GROUP BASED MENTORING PROVIDES A NURTURING ENVIRONMENT FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE TO EXPLORE THEIR POTENTIAL

Safe, enjoyable and supportive, our group based mentoring sessions are ideal for isolated children and young people looking to improve their confidence, self-esteem and social skills. These include both youth clubs and focused workshops.

Our group based mentoring provisions offer children and young people the opportunity to get involved in various activities so that they can explore their interests, skills and support their growth and development.

Currently we use the amazing facilities at Door 84 and are able to offer a wide and diverse range of activities, mutually agreed by the young people.

Activities include arts, crafts, sports, cooking sessions to just name a few, however we also regularly invite local organisations to run workshops in a variety of different activities.

Our sessions are inclusive and we’re always looking for new ways to create accessible spaces and activities for all children and young people, and we have rooms that are disability-friendly with facilities to cater for all needs.

Our group-based mentoring sessions are available for children and young people between the ages of 8 and 16 and can be accessed by making a referral to The Island. The referral will then be assessed by a trained member of the team, and through collaborative discussions with young people and their parents / carers, a bespoke support package will be offered. This will vary per young person depending on the range of needs.

“I love coming to groups. I don't fit in with a lot of other people my age. Group based mentoring has really improved my confidence and made me feel better about myself. It's like having a second family here."

CASE STUDY

Sophie struggled with mood swings, displayed signs of depression and

experienced intense anger.

Sophie worked with The Island's group based volunteer mentors who helped her to overcome her anger issues and advised her how to respond to bullying. Bullying was something that Sophie has experienced throughout school which left adverse effects, which contributed to her anger issues and depression.

The group based mentors helped her to find her voice so that she felt more comfortable about opening up about sensitive issues. Sophie is now thriving both at home and school and feels more confident about tackling future life challenges in a more positive manner.
