Match Makers

Assessment Week - November 2025
At The Island, young people are at the heart of everything we do. During our initial home visit in assessment week we make sure that young people's voices are heard and their opinions matter. Our youth-led approach means that every decision; especially when it comes to matching a young person with their mentor is shaped by what they tell us about themselves, their interests, and what kind of support they’re in need of.
Shortly after assessment week, our team comes together to talk through all the information we’ve learned about the young people during the assessment period. We go through what the young people have shared during their initial assessments, alongside what the mentors have told us in their applications and shown us during their training. We look for those special connections — shared interests, complementary personalities, or just that “gut feeling” that two people will click.
Families are also a big part of this process. They know their young person best and often share insights that help us make sure the match feels right for everyone involved. It’s a team effort! Young people, families, mentors, and staff all working together to build the best possible foundation for a positive mentoring relationship.
When a young person finally meets their mentor, it’s always a special moment for The Island team who is introducing the pair. There’s often a lovely feeling of connection that tells us we’ve got it right. It’s these moments that remind us why taking a careful, youth-led approach is so important during the assessment period and mentor matching meeting.
At The Island, we believe that when young people are listened to, supported, and matched with the right mentor, amazing things can happen. Every match is a step towards another young person in York reaching their full potential... and we’re so proud to be part of that journey.
