Make A Difference this Christmas

The festive season can be a difficult time for the children who use our services here at The Island. During November and December, we offer extra support to those who really need it in order to help them get through the Christmas period.

Support that we offer, include:

  • Additional Mentoring Sessions: offering children who struggle with their mental, emotional and social well-being with extra mentoring sessions provides our Volunteer Mentors with the chance to build and maintain their Mentee’s confidence, self-esteem as well as to help them overcome challenges which the Mentee may face during the Christmas season.
  • Provide families with Christmas Food Hampers: many of the children who use our services live in households where there is in-work poverty. On Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, The Island team delivers Christmas Food Hampers to York families who are struggling to put food on the table for their children and of course, for themselves.
  • Christmas Party: Each year, we work with St. Olave’s School who kindly hosts a Christmas Party for the children who use our services. The Christmas Party provides the children who use our mentoring services with the chance to meet other Mentees and Mentors and is a great opportunity for them to make new friends, develop their social skills as well as build on their confidence and self-esteem. Many group activities take place during the party, which we provide arts and crafts materials for. We find that a Christmas Party brings everyone together and really raises positive feelings amongst our Mentees.

If you would like to make a donation towards our services, please click here, alternatively, if you would like to set up your own fundraiser or would like to provide us with food and drink for our Christmas Food Hampers, then please email enquiries@theislandyork.org.

We look forward to hearing from you soon.

The Island and Make It York presents ChoirFest

A collaborative project between The Island and Make It York, we’re delighted to announce that we’ll be hosting a ChoirFest outside the Mansion House on St. Helen’s Square on Saturday 8 December, 12noon – 4pm.

Bringing together four of York’s finest choirs, the event will showcase a wide range of Christmas and popular music tunes which will get you, your family and friends into the festive spirit. Choirs performing at the event, include the In Harmony Ladies’ Choir, Stamford Bridge Singers, Acomb Community Choir and ending the event on a high will be Lucy’s Pop Choir.

The event is free of charge, however, there will be a collection bucket, so people can make a donation towards our worthy cause if they wish to do so. The donations generated from the event will go towards our one to one mentoring programme which is and hugely successful but oversubscribed service here at The Island.

Our one to one mentoring programme has a high success rate in transforming the lives of children living in York. The programme lasts one year and provides the mentees with the opportunity to build confidence, self-esteem and develop coping mechanisms so that they can take positive steps forward in their lives.

We hope you’ll get involved in the festivities by coming along to show your support. If you would like to volunteer at the ChoirFest, then please get in touch with us via email enquiries@theislandyork.org.

If you are coming along, then don’t forget to RSVP your attendance at at https://www.facebook.com/events/972181946315517/

Summertime Sessions

Acoustic and Folk Mini-Fest – 31 March

We’re delighted to announce that we have been chosen as York’s Little Festival of Live Music’s charity for their upcoming Acoustic and Folk Mini-Fest which will take place at The Black Swan Inn on Saturday 31 March.

We are thrilled to be part of this great event which showcases the work of musicians and bands from across the country as well as raise funds for a local cause.

The festival will be hosting a six and a half hour event in aid of our worthy cause and will feature a wide range of folk and acoustic musicians and bands from across Yorkshire. Acts who will be performing at the Mini-Fest includes rising young performer Scarlett Gordon who performs covers and her own tunes, popular gypsy-celtic group Leather’o; one of the UK’s finest folk and multi-instrumentalists Toni Bunnell who will be launching her highly anticipated seventh album at the event; newly formed norse folk group Bruni who perform music inspired by the Viking era; local acoustic legend David Ward MacleanPlumhall’s Nick Hall who will be performing a rare solo set at the festival and voice of an angel Edwina Hayes, who has won her reputation as a true natural talent of gentle folk-Americana and will be headlining the Mini-Fest.

Watch the acts in action in the video below.

The team who run the festival says “We love hosting our mini-fest which gives us the opportunity to fundraise for a local cause. We are also passionate about collaborating with Grassroots and Independent Talent across the UK and enjoy helping them showcase their work to established and new music lovers. The beauty of our events is that they are family-friendly, it’s great to see a wide range of audiences brought together to celebrate and support great live music. This year we have a wealth of incredible Yorkshire talent taking to the stage at The Black Swan Inn. Every act is completely different from one another and our audiences are guaranteed to discover an eclectic range of music – it’s truly going to be an afternoon and evening of musical delights.”

Entry into the festival is free of charge, however, a suggested donation of £5 will be welcomed. These donations will be given to us at The Island Mentoring Scheme – a local children’s charity which supports vulnerable children from York.

York’s Little Festival of Live Music’s Mini-Fest will take place on Saturday 31 March from 2.30pm-9pm (doors open at 2.15pm).

The event is family-friendly and everyone is welcome to join us for a great day of live music in aid of charity.
