The Island Charity at Sainsbury’s Monks Cross, York

We’re delighted to announce that our charity is going to be at Sainsbury’s (Monks Cross, York) on Saturday 22 September. During our time at the supermarket, we’ll be sharing information about what we do to help enhance the lives of vulnerable children and young people living in York; hosting a fabulous tombola; as well as sharing details about the food bank service, which we offer to deprived families who use our services.

Sainsbury’s at Monks Cross, York is a huge supporter of The Island and we are incredibly grateful for their support and loyalty of the work we do with children and their families across the York area.

We’ll be at Sainsbury’s from 10am until 2pm on Saturday 22 September, so if you are free then do come along and show us your support.

We look forward to seeing you then.

The Lord Mayor of York’s Charity Events

In May, it was announced that The Island York had been chosen as one of the Lord Mayor of York’s charities of the year. We are over the moon to have been selected and we’re enjoying being part of their fundraising activities. The Lord Mayor and his team are aiming to raise £75,000 which will be split between his three chosen charities.

If we were fortunate enough to receive a third of this amount (£25,000), then this would mean that our Weekly Group Sessions will be able to run for five years! As a small local charity, £25,000 is a lot of money to us. This money will allow us to be able to support approx 1,000 children over a five year period, who access our Group Sessions to improve their mental, emotional and social well-being.

There are many ways in which you are able to support the Lord Mayor of York’s charitable efforts. The first is to send a text GIVE to 70145  to donate £3

The second way in which you can support the Lord Mayor’s efforts is to come along to one of the fundraising events. See a list of upcoming events below.

The third and last way you can support the Lord Mayor’s work is to generate your own fundraising activities, the team will support you all the way and you will be raising funds for three amazing local causes – The Island, YBPSS and the York Music Hub. If you would like to create a fundraiser, then please contact Ashley at civic@york.gov.uk or visit www.thelittleboxoffice.com/lordmayoryork

Gym Classes for Children at Swift Fitness York

We’re delighted to announce that we have teamed up with Swift Fitness in York to provide weekly gym sessions for the children who use our services.

Fitness is key to help children and young people take positive steps forward. Participating in physical activity has proven to enhance confidence, self-esteem and mood, which has also transferred to the children’s home and school-life.

Each week, the Swift Fitness team offers a wide range of activities which have been designed to cater for all abilities, from circuits to boxing and from cycling to push-ups, the classes allow the children who use our services to work both on their own as well as part of a team to overcome challenges.

The classes have been well-received and more Island service-users are getting involved each week. The classes have been praised by many, including the children’s teachers who have informed us that they have seen a change in the child’s concentration levels at school.

Here at The Island, our mission is the enhance the mental, emotional and social well-being of vulnerable children living in York. Since our charity began in 2008, we have improved the lives of over a thousand children living in York. We are always looking for new ways in which to support the children who use our services and believe that our partnership with Swift Fitness has had a positive effect on all the children who have got involved.

Our fitness classes at Swift Fitness takes place every Friday from 4.30pm-5.30pm and is run by a fully trained and DBS checked fitness instructor who knows how to get children motivated as well as encourage them to work proactively together in order to complete obstacles.

As a local charity who receives little funding, we rely heavily on the generosity of the public and businesses to keep our services going as well as helping us add new services to our weekly calendar of events. Everything we do here at The Island is to support isolated children and young people living in York.

Sainsbury’s Food Bank Donation Drive for The Island, York

On Saturday 5 May, shoppers at Sainsbury’s Monks Cross were invited to find out more about our food bank during a donation drive. This also gave us the opportunity to share stories with Sainsbury’s customers about the impact their donations have on local children and their families who use our services.

During the day, we were kindly given over 280 items, which will be given to local vulnerable families who need it the most. We also raised an incredible £361.93 from our Tombola, which was a huge achievement. The money raised from the tombola will go towards helping the children and young people who use our services to enhance their mental, emotional and social well-being.

We’d like to thank the Sainsbury’s team at Monk’s Cross for their hospitality throughout the day as well as the customers who stopped to find out more about our work, got involved with our tombola and donated items towards our food bank. Your generosity is hugely appreciated.

If you would like to make a donation towards our food bank, then please email us at enquiries@theislandyork.org
