School-Based Mentoring; Volunteer Recruitment

Volunteer Recruitment

School-Based Mentoring is a project run by a group of 12 volunteer mentors supporting 10 particularly disadvantaged young people in year 5 and 6. The project runs for 20 weekly sessions across the academic year between November and May. Each pupil is matched with a mentor and together they take part in one hour of sports and games and one hour of one to one activities. This one to one time encourages skills development and support. The scheme is coordinated by a Project Leader who liaises with the school, supports the volunteers and leads the sessions.

The project has run for three years now and the results documented the development of meaningful relationships and personal development for all involved.

Sessions are energetic and fun but also provide opportunities for quiet discussion of any worries or challenges the young people may be facing.

The School-Based Mentoring project will be expanding from September. The Island is currently recruiting volunteers. The scheme provides a great opportunity to mentor in a school setting, and to participate in group and one to one interactions.

If you would like to apply, please fill in the Schools Based Mentoring Application (2017) form and return it via email or post to the addresses below.

Should you have any questions please get in touch.

An Island Mentee is awarded with the Young People’s Shine Award 2016

Shine Awards photo 2016We are incredibly pleased to announce and super proud to say that one of our lovely young people has received an award at the fourth annual Lord Mayor of York’s Shine Awards.

The event was hosted by editors of Shine magazine, City of York Council’s magazine, who provided the promotion of activities and opportunities for young people around the city.  Door 84 Young People’s Space in the Groves kindly offered their venue for the evening. A team of young people who make up Door 84’s events team kindly gave their time to organise the event this year.
The award for the young person was requested by her mentor for being an inspirational young person. The mentor said ‘Her thoughts are always with how she can help others and she goes out of her way to assist anyone and everyone. She has turned her thoughts to a bigger project: raising money for St Leonard’s Hospice. In her own words she ”wants to help people have a better life with cancer”. She has put a lot of effort into making all of the sponsorship forms, leaflets and banners from scratch. She has chosen to do a 6-mile run / walk around York and is currently turning it into an event that the whole community can join. The event will take place later this year and she is working hard on putting it together. She would never expect to be recognised for her thoughtfulness, but I feel that she deserves to be.’

The young person received her award and even got to try on the Lord Mayor’s chains, she was super happy and we are certainly very proud – Thank you Shine Awards for embracing these young people and acknowledging their achievements.

Monk Park Farm Summer Outing 2015

This Summer we had a fantastic time on our Summer Outing to visit Monk Park Farm, in North Yorkshire.

The children were able to feed a variety of animals. There were lambs, sheep, goats, calves, pigs, donkeys, llamas, alpacas, hens, peacocks, rabbits and guinea pigs. The rabbits and guinea pigs were extremely popular!

There were also other popular features and attractions including an adventure playground, nature trail and lake. The children could also play in the pedal car/tractors arena as well as go-carts and barrel rides.

At lunch time the children and adults each received a pack up picnic lunch followed by their own choice of ice cream, which they thoroughly enjoyed!

Some of the comments and quotes from the children were:
– “this is the best day of my life”
– “go-carts are well cool”
– “the animals were so cute, especially the guinea pigs”
