During the festive period, The Botonist is spreading a little extra Christmas cheer by helping raise money for The Island York.

The Botonist will be adding a contribution of £1 per table to each bill that will go directly to The Island. They will also donate 25p from every kids meal sold to The Island. We are so grateful, so please encourage family and friends to go along for a fun time, great food and fantastic atmosphere.

Ware & Kay Solicitors conquer The Major Series!

ware-and-kayuOn Sunday 16th October, Ware & Kaye Solicitors not only conquered The Major Series but in the process managed to raise just over £600 for our charity.

On behalf of everyone here at The Island Mentoring Scheme, we would like to thank all those at Ware & Kay who supported and competed in The Major Series. It has been such an encouragement. The Island Mentoring Scheme seeks to raise fund locally through various events and once again we are so thankful to Ware & Kay and all those involved for raising funds to continue this vital service to children and young people in York.

An Island Mentee is awarded with the Young People’s Shine Award 2016

Shine Awards photo 2016We are incredibly pleased to announce and super proud to say that one of our lovely young people has received a prestigious Young People’s Shine Award.

The event was hosted by editors of Shine magazine, City of York Council’s magazine, who provided the promotion of activities and opportunities for young people around the city.  Door 84 Young People’s Space in the Groves kindly offered their venue for the evening. A team of young people who make up Door 84’s events team kindly gave their time to organise the event this year.
The award for the young person was requested by her mentor for being an inspirational young person. The mentor said ‘Her thoughts are always with how she can help others and she goes out of her way to assist anyone and everyone. She has turned her thoughts to a bigger project: raising money for St Leonard’s Hospice. In her own words she ”wants to help people have a better life with cancer”. She has put a lot of effort into making all of the sponsorship forms, leaflets and banners from scratch. She has chosen to do a 6-mile run / walk around York and is currently turning it into an event that the whole community can join. The event will take place later this year and she is working hard on putting it together. She would never expect to be recognised for her thoughtfulness, but I feel that she deserves to be.’

The young person received her award and even got to try on the Lord Mayor’s chains, she was super happy and we are certainly very proud – Thank you Shine Awards for embracing these young people and acknowledging their achievements.

The Island York’s Monk Park Farm Summer Outing

This Summer we had a fantastic time on our Summer Outing to visit Monk Park Farm, in North Yorkshire.

The children who use our services here at The Island York were able to feed a variety of animals. There were lambs, sheep, goats, calves, pigs, donkeys, llamas, alpacas, hens, peacocks, rabbits and guinea pigs. The rabbits and guinea pigs were extremely popular!

There were also other popular features and attractions including an adventure playground, nature trail, and lake. The children could also play in the pedal car/tractors arena as well as go-carts and barrel rides.

At lunchtime the children and adults each received a pack up picnic lunch followed by their own choice of ice cream, which they thoroughly enjoyed!

Some of the comments and quotes from the children were:
– “this is the best day of my life”
– “go-carts are well cool”
– “the animals were so cute, especially the guinea pigs”
