Fundraiser at the YWMB Networking Event

On Monday 14 May, Catherine Adamson organised a raffle at the York Women Mean Business networking event to raise funds for her upcoming 109-mile walk and wild camping challenge across the Cleveland Way. Catherine is hoping to raise £10,000, which will be split equally between The Island York and Sash.
Raffle Prizes

The number of businesses who gave generously to Catherine’s fundraiser was incredible. Throughout the evening, the YWMB group raised an amazing £520, which is a great result.

Catherine’s main challenge aka the 109-mile walk will begin on Saturday 2 June and she’s hoping to complete her mission by Friday 8 June. She still has a long way to go in order to reach her £10,000 goal, however, we are confident that she will be able to reach her target.

As a small charity, £5,000 is a lot of money to us. £5,000 means that we’ll be able to offer 333 one-to-one activities to the children and young people who use our services. The activities provide the children and young people with the opportunity to explore their potential, whilst working closely with their fully trained mentor. Our one-to-one mentoring service has proven to enhance the mental, emotional and social well-being of children and young people as well as reduce anti-social and criminal behaviour within our communities.

If you are able to support Catherine by sponsoring her, then we’d really appreciate it. To donate visit >>> https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/CatherineAdamson

On behalf of everyone here at The Island York we would like to thank you for your generosity and support so that we can keep our services going.

Sainsbury’s Food Bank Donation Drive for The Island, York

On Saturday 5 May, shoppers at Sainsbury’s Monks Cross were invited to find out more about our food bank during a donation drive. This also gave us the opportunity to share stories with Sainsbury’s customers about the impact their donations have on local children and their families who use our services.

During the day, we were kindly given over 280 items, which will be given to local vulnerable families who need it the most. We also raised an incredible £361.93 from our Tombola, which was a huge achievement. The money raised from the tombola will go towards helping the children and young people who use our services to enhance their mental, emotional and social well-being.

We’d like to thank the Sainsbury’s team at Monk’s Cross for their hospitality throughout the day as well as the customers who stopped to find out more about our work, got involved with our tombola and donated items towards our food bank. Your generosity is hugely appreciated.

If you would like to make a donation towards our food bank, then please email us at enquiries@theislandyork.org

Acoustic and Folk Mini-Fest – 31 March

We’re delighted to announce that we have been chosen as York’s Little Festival of Live Music’s charity for their upcoming Acoustic and Folk Mini-Fest which will take place at The Black Swan Inn on Saturday 31 March.

We are thrilled to be part of this great event which showcases the work of musicians and bands from across the country as well as raise funds for a local cause.

The festival will be hosting a six and a half hour event in aid of our worthy cause and will feature a wide range of folk and acoustic musicians and bands from across Yorkshire. Acts who will be performing at the Mini-Fest includes rising young performer Scarlett Gordon who performs covers and her own tunes, popular gypsy-celtic group Leather’o; one of the UK’s finest folk and multi-instrumentalists Toni Bunnell who will be launching her highly anticipated seventh album at the event; newly formed norse folk group Bruni who perform music inspired by the Viking era; local acoustic legend David Ward MacleanPlumhall’s Nick Hall who will be performing a rare solo set at the festival and voice of an angel Edwina Hayes, who has won her reputation as a true natural talent of gentle folk-Americana and will be headlining the Mini-Fest.

Watch the acts in action in the video below.

The team who run the festival says “We love hosting our mini-fest which gives us the opportunity to fundraise for a local cause. We are also passionate about collaborating with Grassroots and Independent Talent across the UK and enjoy helping them showcase their work to established and new music lovers. The beauty of our events is that they are family-friendly, it’s great to see a wide range of audiences brought together to celebrate and support great live music. This year we have a wealth of incredible Yorkshire talent taking to the stage at The Black Swan Inn. Every act is completely different from one another and our audiences are guaranteed to discover an eclectic range of music – it’s truly going to be an afternoon and evening of musical delights.”

Entry into the festival is free of charge, however, a suggested donation of £5 will be welcomed. These donations will be given to us at The Island Mentoring Scheme – a local children’s charity which supports vulnerable children from York.

York’s Little Festival of Live Music’s Mini-Fest will take place on Saturday 31 March from 2.30pm-9pm (doors open at 2.15pm).

The event is family-friendly and everyone is welcome to join us for a great day of live music in aid of charity.
