Make A Difference this Christmas

The festive season can be a difficult time for the children who use our services here at The Island. During November and December, we offer extra support to those who really need it in order to help them get through the Christmas period.

Support that we offer, include:

  • Additional Mentoring Sessions: offering children who struggle with their mental, emotional and social well-being with extra mentoring sessions provides our Volunteer Mentors with the chance to build and maintain their Mentee’s confidence, self-esteem as well as to help them overcome challenges which the Mentee may face during the Christmas season.
  • Provide families with Christmas Food Hampers: many of the children who use our services live in households where there is in-work poverty. On Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, The Island team delivers Christmas Food Hampers to York families who are struggling to put food on the table for their children and of course, for themselves.
  • Christmas Party: Each year, we work with St. Olave’s School who kindly hosts a Christmas Party for the children who use our services. The Christmas Party provides the children who use our mentoring services with the chance to meet other Mentees and Mentors and is a great opportunity for them to make new friends, develop their social skills as well as build on their confidence and self-esteem. Many group activities take place during the party, which we provide arts and crafts materials for. We find that a Christmas Party brings everyone together and really raises positive feelings amongst our Mentees.

If you would like to make a donation towards our services, please click here, alternatively, if you would like to set up your own fundraiser or would like to provide us with food and drink for our Christmas Food Hampers, then please email enquiries@theislandyork.org.

We look forward to hearing from you soon.

The Co-op Payout Celebration Day with The Island

We’re thrilled and grateful to have been chosen as a cause which the Co-op supported this year. Their support has enabled us to continue to offer mentoring services to children and young people in York which have proven to enhance their mental, emotional and social wellbeing.

On Saturday 24 November, our children’s charity will be at Co-op on Hull Road from 10am until 2pm. During the event, we will be showcasing what we do to help isolated children in York, how the funding from the Co-op will help them plus much more.

It is crucial that children and young people receive mentoring as it can create a positive learning relationship between two people, provide ‘normality’ and stability also builds confidence and self-esteem. We ensure that every child is welcomed and supported from day one.

We hope you’ll get involved in our activities at the Co-op by volunteering or coming along to show your support. If you have any questions or would like more information about The Island, then please get in touch with us via email enquiries@theislandyork.org.

The Lord Mayor of York’s Charity Events

In May, it was announced that The Island York had been chosen as one of the Lord Mayor of York’s charities of the year. We are over the moon to have been selected and we’re enjoying being part of their fundraising activities. The Lord Mayor and his team are aiming to raise £75,000 which will be split between his three chosen charities.

If we were fortunate enough to receive a third of this amount (£25,000), then this would mean that our Weekly Group Sessions will be able to run for five years! As a small local charity, £25,000 is a lot of money to us. This money will allow us to be able to support approx 1,000 children over a five year period, who access our Group Sessions to improve their mental, emotional and social well-being.

There are many ways in which you are able to support the Lord Mayor of York’s charitable efforts. The first is to send a text GIVE to 70145  to donate £3

Volunteer Mentor Recruitment at The Island York

We’re currently performing a volunteer mentor drive here at The Island York. Supporting vulnerable York children by providing them with a range of mentoring services, the mentors work with the service-users to help raise their mental, emotional and social wellbeing. We need more volunteers to come forward to help us so that we can reduce our waiting list numbers.

We currently have over 140 isolated children on our waiting list, who need to access our services. Providing one-to-one mentoring, school-based mentoring and group work, our mentors can decide which route they would like to take in order to help the next generation.

One-to-One Mentoring

One-to-One Mentoring is a 12-month programme in which a mentor works with their mentee to help them overcome challenges within lives. This is an oversubscribed scheme and we need more mentors who will be able to commit to the one-year programme. By committing to the programme for one-year, you’ll be able to offer your mentee with the regular support that they so desperately need. Days and times can be negotiated of when to meet with your mentee.

Group or School-Based Mentoring

We offer a range of group and school-based mentoring schemes which offers great flexibility to those who are unable to commit to a 12-month programme. We do, however, recommend that you commit to either project for at least six months. This is to ensure that you and the children make the most of the experience as part of work which takes place. You can volunteer once a week or even once a month which means that this is a perfect volunteer role for those who work shifts or lead busy lives.

Our next training sessions will take place at our office on Priory Street in early 2019. Once you have completed the course you will be awarded with an accredited training certificate, which is ideal for those looking to build a career within children’s services.

If you would like to become a Mentor at The Island, then please click here to download an application form and then either email it to us or pop it into the post.

If you are unable to commit to mentoring but would like to help The Island, then we’ll really appreciate any fundraising event which you can host on our behalf. As a small local charity, we receive little funding and rely heavily on grants and business and public donations in order to keep our mentoring services going. Please email us if you can help, alternatively you can join our Friends of The Island Facebook Group.

If you have any questions at all then please do not hesitate to contact us on 01904 628449.

We look forward to hearing from you soon!

Music at the Shambles Market

We’re delighted to announce that we’ll be hosting a music event at the Shambles Market every Sunday from 11am-4pm throughout June. Come and join us for four days of amazing music performed by some of the finest musicians from across Yorkshire. The event is free entry, family-friendly and everyone is welcome. During the events we’ll be raising funds for our worthy causes, so any donations you can offer, however big or small would be greatly appreciated.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Summertime Sessions

Gym Classes for Children at Swift Fitness York

We’re delighted to announce that we have teamed up with Swift Fitness in York to provide weekly gym sessions for the children who use our services.

Fitness is key to help children and young people take positive steps forward. Participating in physical activity has proven to enhance confidence, self-esteem and mood, which has also transferred to the children’s home and school-life.

Each week, the Swift Fitness team offers a wide range of activities which have been designed to cater for all abilities, from circuits to boxing and from cycling to push-ups, the classes allow the children who use our services to work both on their own as well as part of a team to overcome challenges.

The classes have been well-received and more Island service-users are getting involved each week. The classes have been praised by many, including the children’s teachers who have informed us that they have seen a change in the child’s concentration levels at school.

Here at The Island, our mission is the enhance the mental, emotional and social well-being of vulnerable children living in York. Since our charity began in 2008, we have improved the lives of over a thousand children living in York. We are always looking for new ways in which to support the children who use our services and believe that our partnership with Swift Fitness has had a positive effect on all the children who have got involved.

Our fitness classes at Swift Fitness takes place every Friday from 4.30pm-5.30pm and is run by a fully trained and DBS checked fitness instructor who knows how to get children motivated as well as encourage them to work proactively together in order to complete obstacles.

As a local charity who receives little funding, we rely heavily on the generosity of the public and businesses to keep our services going as well as helping us add new services to our weekly calendar of events. Everything we do here at The Island is to support isolated children and young people living in York.

To make a difference to a child who uses our services, please click here to make a donation.

Lord Mayor of York chooses The Island as one of his Charities

Councillor Keith Orrell, who will become the new Lord Mayor of York on Thursday 24 May has announced which charities he will support during his year in office. We are thrilled that one of his chosen charities is The Island!

Commenting on his choice, Cllr Orrell said: “The Lady Mayoress Elect, Sheriff Elect, Verna Campbell, her consort and I considered the selection of our charities very carefully. There are so many charities that do such valuable work for the people of our area that it was a very difficult decision. We are really delighted to have found 3 organisations that really make a difference to the people they support, and together span the generations.”

It is traditional for each Lord Mayor and Sheriff to raise funds for local causes during their tenure and this year will be no different! Events include some traditional favourites, such as the Assize of Ale and the Valentines Ball, which will be held at the Railway Museum. Some of the core contemporary events will be the Lady Mayoress’s Fashion Show, a Gin Festival and a series of musical performances in historic venues.

Cllr Ashley Mason, who will be heading up the Lord Mayor’s fundraising committee added “This year is set to be unforgettable, with so many events for the public to attend to raise funds for the chosen charities. I have implemented several innovative changes to bring us up to date and ensure as many people as possible can get involved. These include online ticket sales for our events, the use of Twitter and a new text to donate option.”

People can visit www.lordmayoryork.co.uk to see what events are coming up and book tickets. They can also follow the fundraising committee on twitter @LordMayorYork and even text to donate, by sending the word GIVE to 70145 to donate £3.

Mrs Campbell, the Sheriff Elect added “we are very much looking forward to an enjoyable year, and hope the people of York will help us to raise funds to support our charities work.”
